The May 2027 exam format
AB and BC share the same structure. From May 2027 the multiple-choice section has 42 questions, and each section counts for half of your score.

From raw points to a 1–5 score
One point per correct answer, scaled by about 1.29 so the section weighs the same as the free response. Wrong answers lose nothing, so never leave a blank.
Each question is scored out of 9. A correct setup, an accurate derivative or a justified conclusion earns points even when the final answer is wrong.
College Board sets the cut points after every exam, so they shift slightly each year. Our calculators use estimated cut points.
What does each AP score mean?
Extremely well qualified
Accepted for credit or placement at most colleges that award AP credit.
Well qualified
Widely accepted for credit or placement.
Qualified
Accepted by many colleges; some selective universities require a 4 or 5.
Possibly qualified
Rarely earns credit.
No recommendation
Does not earn credit.

Frequently asked questions
Is there a penalty for wrong answers?
No. Only correct answers count, so answer every multiple-choice question, even if you have to guess.
What composite score do I need for a 5?
There is no fixed number. College Board sets the cut points after each exam based on that year’s results, so they vary slightly from year to year. Our calculators use estimated cut points to predict your score.
Does the AP Calculus BC exam give an AB subscore?
Yes. BC students also receive a Calculus AB subscore from 1 to 5, based on the questions that cover AB content. Many colleges accept it for AB-level credit.
Did the 2027 changes affect the course content?
No. College Board has updated the number of multiple-choice questions and the timing, but the course content has not changed.
Is the calculator result my official AP score?
No. It is an estimate based on the points you enter and on estimated cut points. Official scores are released by College Board in July.
